      "If Americans halved their salt intake, as many as 150,000 premature deaths could be prevented each year, according to the American Medical Association. And new research presented March 11 by Bibbins-Domingo at the AHA's annual conference shows that even small reductions — as little as 1 g of salt per day — could have dramatic effects, saving 200,000 lives over the course of a decade." 03-09

  2. America's Five Saltiest Fast Foods (MSNBC News)
      "Nearly all egg- or pancake-based breakfast dishes at Denny’s break the 1,000-milligram sodium barrier, meaning that you’re more likely than not to consume half a day’s worth of salt during your morning meal. To stay safe, stick to the Ultimate Omelette, or order several sides and call them a meal."

      "Chinese food is stuffed with sodium because it too often relies on viscous stir-fry sauces and super salty condiments like soy sauce. We initially called out P.F.       "More than 100 percent of your daily sodium allowance is trapped inside this burger's bun. And the three slices of processed American cheese are oozing with 780 mg sodium. Try the Low-Carb Thickburger--you'll shave 1,000 calories and 1,700 mg sodium." 08-08

      "With ever-expanding portion sizes, supersalty foods are displacing fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in potassium. And a 1:2 ratio of dietary salt to potassium is critical for your health. Studies show that a high-sodium, low-potassium diet is linked to a host of maladies, including high blood pressure, stroke, osteoporosis, and exercise-induced asthma." 08-08

  6. Saltiest Kid's Meal: Cosi Kid's Pepperoni Pizza (MSNBC News)
      "Kids under 13 should max out at 1,900 to 2,200 mg sodium a day, according to American Heart Association. This pizza serves up nearly three times that much, plus an entire day's worth of calories. You could feed your child 50 turkey sandwiches at Cosi for the same sodium price tag. (But stick to just one.)" 08-08

  7. Saltiest Soup: Baja Chicken Tortilla (MSNBC News)
      "Soup and salt are nearly synonymous in the food world, but Baja takes it to the extreme, sinking more than a day's worth of sodium into a single serving. Start with a bowl of stewed black beans with a scoop of fresh salsa instead; a serving has an eye-popping, belly-filling 26 grams (g) of fiber, with less than half the salt of the soup." 08-08
