Overview

Whether the reader is an engineer, manager, analyst, or student, simulation users and developers alike will find a great deal of value in the book. It provides a practical introduction to the power and utility of simulation technology. Simulation Modeling with SIMUL8 is useful for learning about the theory behind simulation, its uses within various industries, and a guide to the SIMUL8 software.

Simulation

The Simulation Section provides an overview of discrete event simulation modeling and some of the issues that relate to it in general, without citing a specific software package.

Business Process Simulation Applications

In the Business Process Simulation Applications Section, numerous case examples show how simulation can be applied in a variety of ways to address a diverse set of business issues from traditional manufacturing simulation and logistics modeling to business simulation in the service industry.

Logistics Modeling Case Study:

With volumes of inbound and outbound containers soon to surpass a facility’s capacity, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) needed a tool to help determine an economical solution. Visual8 responded by developing a facility-wide simulation to analyze the performance of the Inter-modal facility under various capital improvement options.

The logistics and modeling simulation provides detailed analysis of all aspects of the Inter-modal facility, including all activities, resources and storage capacities within the facility.  Examples of key logistics modeling and management statistics include trucker dwell times, train turn around times, resource utilization, track turnover ratios, toplifter travel distances, and overall cost per handling.

Manufacturing Simulation Software Case Study:

Armstrong, a furniture manufacturer, wished to determine the most suitable production layout and capacity levels required to meet desired product throughput levels. Visual8 constructed a manufacturing simulation model which allowed for rigorous testing of potential situations that might have caused Board Mill blockages or production shutdowns. This analysis assisted in the design of a system where the Board Mill could operate at maximum capacity in an uninterrupted fashion. The manufacturing simulation model also allowed users to evaluate alternative crew staffing plans to help in reducing labor costs.

The manufacturing simulation model covered the entire future state. It was designed to collect information on all of the required performance indicators, including the utilization and blockage of the Board Mill; crew utilization by shift pattern; warehouse space utilization; order delivery performance; Goods in Process (GIP), etc.

SIMUL8 Reference

The SIMUL8 Reference Section shows how to create simulation models using SIMUL8 software and features.  This enables the developer to produce powerful decision-making tools.

Lean-Modeler – Value Stream Mapping Software: Value stream mapping software, with the added dimension of time.

Lean-Modeler Software is more than just another value stream mapping tool. It is a powerful simulation software package that takes the guess work out of future-state modeling.

Traditional value stream maps are static, a snapshot in time.  On this snapshot rests the rationale for radical changes to organizational processes.
Lean-Modeler takes away the 'leap-of-faith' associated with static maps by simulating value streams – current or future state – over time.

Lean-Modeler can help you obtain more realistic performance results, by incorporating both time and process variability into standard value stream mapping techniques.  By combining an easy-to-use, drag-and-drop interface with powerful underlying simulation capability, Lean-Modeler introduces a whole new dimension to value stream mapping! Please visit www.lean-modeler.com for more information.

AutoMod Software:

3D material handling simulation software.

Visual8 has been selected as the Canadian Distributor of AutoMod Software.

Leading manufacturers worldwide have selected the AutoMod simulation environment to build highly detailed models for analysis and development of complex materials handling systems.

By simulating your processes in AutoMod's virtual world you can save time and money in the real world.

AutoMod Software Model Accuracy

To be a truly useful decision making tool, a simulation model needs to be accurate. The AutoMod Software suite of simulation tools provides an environment for building highly accurate engineering models for analysis and development, as well as for control system emulation.

Every operation uses different rules, and AutoMod Software is flexible to allow modeling of your own specific requirements. AutoMod differs from other simulation tools because there are no limitations on:

AutoMod includes templates for accurate modeling of material movement, whether by conveyor, lift truck, operator, overhead crane, or automated vehicle. These templates give the user unlimited flexibility for movement modeling, and also help speed up model construction without compromising accuracy.

AutoMod models are also graphically accurate. All work is done to scale in AutoMod, with real time, Virtual Reality graphic animation helping to validate the model and communicate the design visually. A "picture is worth a thousand words", and AutoMod's VR graphics significantly reduce the number of words required to communicate a system design.

Virtual Reality 3-D Graphics

AutoMod provides the user with a set of material handling system templates that have been developed with real-world experience in industrial automation. As a result, a substantial portion of the underlying model is automatically generated for the user from the graphics and the material handling system input parameters.

AutoMod movement systems include:

  1. Conveyors - Accumulating, non-accumulating, roller, and belt conveyor systems.
  2. Path Based Movement - Used to model vehicles that follow a route or path (manual lift trucks or automated guided vehicles), or people moving along a path or route.
  3. Power & Free - Similar to a conveyor system, but moves around to pick up loads rather than moving loads along a fixed conveyor. Generally consists of an overhead trolley with "dogs" (hooks hanging from the chain sections).
  4. Bridge Crane - A set of rails on which a crane moves over pickup and delivery (P&D) areas.
  5. AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System) - One or more aisles of storage racks where Storage/Retrieval Machines (S/RMs) pick up and retrieve loads. Storage racks are arranged along parallel aisles; both sides of each aisle are served by a single S/RM.

Continuous Process Modeling

AutoMod provides a specialized environment for modeling fluid and bulk materials storage and flow. Both continuous and discrete processes can be modeled using the tanks and pipes module.

Runtime License

With an AutoMod Runtime license, "what-if" scenarios can be performed on pre-built models. Users can change parameters, run models and view results in run-time mode. The addition of AutoStat to a Runtime license provides enhanced statistical analysis capability in run-time mode.

Discrete Event Simulation

In discrete event simulation, the operation of a system is represented as a chronological sequence of discrete events. Each discrete event occurs at an instant in time and marks a change of state in the system. When used in a virtual software application this process is called a discrete event simulation.
