  7. 04-14-10 Astronauts Decry Obama's Space Plan (CNN News)
"The Obama administration's vision for the future of manned space flight will bump the United States to "second or even third-rate" status as a space-faring nation, the commanders of three U.S. moon missions warned Wednesday."

"The letter was signed by the first and last men to walk on the moon -- Neil Armstrong from Apollo 11 and Eugene Cernan from Apollo 17 -- and James Lovell, who commanded the heroic Apollo 13 flight." 04-10

  8. -08-07-05 Discovery to Land (CNN News)
"NASA engineers on the ground and astronauts in space are preparing for the first re-entry of a space shuttle since the 2003 Columbia disaster."

" 'Staff preparing NASA's main landing facility for Monday's 4:46 a.m. ET scheduled touchdown were feeling a bit of "nervous excitement," an agency spokesman said.' " 8-05

  9. 09-19-05 NASA to Replace Shuttle Design (Bloomberg.com)
"NASA plans to replace the space shuttle with a reusable spacecraft shaped like the Apollo capsule that first took U.S. astronauts to the moon in 1969, the U.S. space agency said today."

"The Crew Exploration Vehicle will be three times as big as the Apollo capsule and can be used as many as 10 times, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a statement."

"The spacecraft will be able to take as many as four astronauts to the moon and as many as six people on missions to Mars, NASA said. It will also be able to deliver supplies and crews to the International Space Station." 9-05

  10. The Smell of Moon Dust (NASA)
"Moondust was incredibly clingy, sticking to boots, gloves and other exposed surfaces. No matter how hard they tried to brush their suits before re-entering the cabin, some dust (and sometimes a lot of dust) made its way inside."

"Once their helmets and gloves were off, the astronauts could feel, smell and even taste the moon." 02-06

  11. New Spaceship Design (NASA)
"Before the end of the next decade, NASA astronauts will again explore the surface of the moon. And this time, we're going to stay, building outposts and paving the way for eventual journeys to Mars and beyond. There are echoes of the iconic images of the past, but it won't be your grandfather's moon shot." 02-06

  12. Monitoring Near Earth Objects Recommended (Cosmic Log)
"Astronauts and other space experts are calling for the formation of new international organizations to monitor a threat that may not be as imminent as the current financial crisis but would be even more catastrophic: a cosmic collision with an asteroid or comet."

"The United Nations could decide to do nothing at all, but Schweickart hopes the world body will create a system as authoritative about cosmic threats as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is about global warming." 09-08

  13. Hubble Space Telescope Gets Final Upgrade (MSNBC News)
"When astronauts from the shuttle Atlantis open up the Hubble Space Telescope for its final extreme makeover, much of the work will be aimed at fixing what's been ailing the world's premier orbiting observatory. It'll get fresh batteries and brand-new gyros, and if all goes well, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph will be back in full working order for the first time in years."

"But this is not just a fix-up mission. Two new instruments are due to be swapped into the mix, and those enhancements should give Hubble superpowers it never had before: for example, three-in-one vision that spans the spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, and the ability to make out the cosmic cobwebs that stretch out between galaxies." 05-09

  14. -07-19-09 NASA Releases Clearest Videos of 1969 Moonwalk (CNN News)
"NASA released newly restored videos Thursday of two U.S. astronauts taking the world's first steps on the moon." 07-09

  15. -02-02-10 Obama Cuts Back Space Program (Time.com)
"On Monday, NASA administrator Charlie Bolden unveiled both Obama's proposed space budget through 2015 and the Administration's plans for how that money should be spent. And though Bolden filled his prepared remarks with all the usual promises to 'blaze a new trail,' answer a 'bold challenge,' 'spur innovation' and, of course, inspire young people, the fact of the matter is that the new plans will keep America on the ground for most of the next decade or longer. And whenever U.S. astronauts finally do return to space, they won't be going very far." 01-10

  16. -02-02-10 Winners From Obama's Green Job Incentives (U.S. News)

  17. -08-01-11 Earth's Tugboat Astereoid (Time.com)
"Now there's word out of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory that astronomers have just discovered Earth's first Trojan asteroid — a rock that shares our own solar orbit, leading us around the sun like a tugboat pulling an ocean liner. That's big news not just because such an object had never been spotted before, but also because a Trojan could make such an easy and nifty place for astronauts to visit." 08-11

  18. New Designs for Space Travel Suits (Txchnologist.com)
"Despite daily, rigorous exercise and resistance-training routines, astronauts find it exceedingly difficult to maintain their muscle and bone strength in space. In fact, the risk of skeletal fracture is considered by many experts to be the single most important limiting aspect of long-duration spaceflight.”

"Duda, Newman and other researchers are working to develop new spacesuit designs that could help counteract these threats as well as avoid some of the familiar drawbacks of current spacesuit models such as bulk, weight and rigidity." 03-12

  19. -05-23-12 SpaceX Opens New Commerical Path to Outer Space (ABC News)
"A privately built space capsule that's zipping its way to the International Space Station has also launched something else: A new for-profit space race."

"The capsule called Dragon was due to arrive near the space station for tests early Thursday and dock on Friday with its load of supplies. Space Exploration Technologies Corp. — run by PayPal co-founder Elon Musk — was hired by NASA to deliver cargo and eventually astronauts to the orbital outpost."

"And the space agency is hiring others, too."

"Several firms think they can make money in space and are close enough to Musk's company to practically surf in his spaceship's rocket-fueled wake. There are now more companies looking to make money in orbit — at least eight — than major U.S. airlines still flying." 07-07

  20. -09-26-13 New Discovery: Water "Everywhere" on Mars (Time.com)
"What jumps out of the analysis right away is that the soil—mostly sandy grains dug from a mound in a spot known as Rocknest, inside of Gale Crater —is the presence of water, which adds up to about two percent of the soil, by weight. 'If you took a cubic foot of this material and heated it,” says Leshin, 'You’d about get two pints of water. I think that’s pretty amazing.' "

"The amazing part isn’t so much that there’s water on Mars: scientists have known for years that the life-giving liquid flowed freely and abundantly across the Martian surface billions of years ago, and that water in the form of ice still exists in reasonable quantities at the planet’s poles. But these sandy particles were blown here from all over Mars before settling to the ground. This one sample, therefore, tells us that the water Leshin’s team found is spread pretty much everywhere on the planet. No matter where astronauts eventually land, they’ll be able to cook their water supplies right out of the dirt."
