Global Warming 2006
News
- -01-10-06 Ministerial Meeting (BBC News)
"The first ministerial meeting of a controversial alliance promising economic growth with low carbon emissions has opened in Sydney."
"The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate aims to develop and promote technologies such as "clean coal", nuclear and renewables." 01-06
- -02-17-06 Waterworld 1,000 years From Now (TimesOnline)
"By the next millennium the global map will have been redrawn by disastrous climate changes, according to a new forecast." 02-06
- -02-27-06 Voluntary Cuts in Greenhouse Gases Not Working (ABC News)
"U.S. emissions of gases blamed for global warming rose 1.7 percent in 2004, as the country burned more fossil fuel for transportation and electricity, according to federal environment regulators."
"The EPA did not indicate how U.S. emissions would fare in the future, but climate researchers say voluntary cuts won't trim overall greenhouse output in the United States." 02-06
- -03-04-06 Our Poles Are Melting (ABC News)
"For the first time, scientists have confirmed Earth is melting at both ends, which could have disastrous effects for coastal cities and villages."
"Antarctica has been called 'a slumbering giant' by a climate scientist who predicts that if all the ice melted, sea levels would rise by 200 feet. Other scientists believe that such a thing won't happen, but new studies show that the slumbering giant has started to stir." 03-06
- -03-13-06 Carbon Levels Accelerating (BBC News)
"US climate scientists have recorded a significant rise in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, pushing it to a new record level."
" 'We don't see any sign of a decrease; in fact, we're seeing the opposite, the rate of increase is accelerating,' Dr Pieter Tans told the BBC." 03-06
- -03-21-06 Rewriting Science (CBS News)
"Hansen is arguably the world's leading researcher on global warming. He's the head of NASA's top institute studying the climate. But this imminent scientist tells correspondent Scott Pelley that the Bush administration is restricting who he can talk to and editing what he can say. Politicians, he says, are rewriting the science." 3-06
- -03-23-06 Climate Model Predicts Submerged Cities (Scientific American)
"Now a refined climate model is predicting, among other things, sea level rises of as much as 20 feet, according to research results published today in the journal Science."
"Such a sea level rise would permanently inundate low-lying lands like New Orleans, southern Florida, Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Already sea level rise has increased to an inch per decade, thanks to melting ice and warm water expansion, according to Overpeck."
" 'We need to start serious measures to reduce greenhouse gases within the next decade," Overpeck says. 'If we don't do something soon, we're committed to [13 to 20 feet] of sea level rise in the future.' " 03-06
- -03-23-06 Oceans to Rise (USA Today)
"At the current rate of rising temperatures, by the year 2100 Arctic summers could be as warm as they were 130,000 years ago. Back then, in a time known as the last interglacial, the oceans were 20 feet higher than they are now."
"That does not mean the researchers are predicting a 20-foot ocean rise by the end of this century; more like a couple of feet, they think. But such a warming is expected to accelerate melting of the polar ice and could lead to considerable additional sea-level rise, they said." 03-06
- -04-14-06 British Top Scientist Gives Grim Warning (TimesOnline.com)
"The Government's chief scientist today gave his starkest warning yet about the world's increasing carbon emissions saying that even the best-case scenario put millions of lives at risk by the end of the century." 04-06
