Budget Deficit 2005

News
  1. -07-29-05 Congress Approves Bill to Support Coal and Nuclear Fuels (CNN News)
"The bill now ready for President Bush's signature won't stem high energy prices that have been viewed as a growing political concern, both in Congress and at the White House."

"The bill provides $14.5 billion in tax breaks and potentially billions more in loan guarantees and other subsidies to encourage oil and gas drilling, improve natural gas and electric transmission lines, build new nuclear power reactors and expand renewable energy sources, especially construction of wind turbines." 7-05

  2. -08-15-05 Deficit Drops (CBS News)
"The federal budget-deficit picture turned brighter Monday as congressional scorekeepers released new estimates showing the level of red ink for the current fiscal year would drop to $331 billion."

"The new report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which does budget analysis for lawmakers in Washington, gave the latest proof that surging revenues and a steadily growing economy are combining to bring the deficit down from a record $412 billion posted last year. CBO predicts a $314 billion deficit for the budget year starting Oct. 1." 8-05

  3. Senate Republicans Balk at Bush Plan (CBS News)
"President Bush's quest to rein in congressional spending is losing ground to Senate old-timers in his own party who understand the power of the purse and aren't reluctant to use it." 7-05

Papers
  1. Bush Second Term Difficulties (Bloomberg.com)
"President George W. Bush closes out the first 100 days of his second term this weekend with his ambitious agenda weighted down by political diversions and by public and partisan opposition to his signature issue."

"National polls show Bush's support on Social Security has declined since he began promoting the plan. The most recent Gallup Organization survey, conducted April 18-21, found 37 percent of adults named fuel prices or economic concerns as the most important issues facing the country, compared with 7 percent who cited Social Security. In a Zogby International poll released April 26, 53 percent disapproved of Bush's handling of the presidency and 64 percent said they disapproved of how he's dealing with Social Security." 4-05

  2. Misrepresentations by the Bush Administration (Misleader.org)
Provides quotes from key members of the Bush administration, especially the President, that Misleader.org presents as evidence of distortions of the truth. Examples include the following from President Bush's State of the Union address to the nation:

      "On the Economy:
'We will not pass along our problems to other Congresses, to other presidents and other generations.'

The truth: Factoring in the cost of reconstruction in Iraq and other laws that are set to be enacted, the federal budget deficit is close to $5 trillion over the next 10 years. The President's latest request to make his tax cuts permanent would add another nearly $1.6 trillion to the federal debt through 2013. That's $41,300 for every man, woman and child." 9-03

  3. Senate Rejects Bush Plan to Cut Medicaid (MSNBC News)
"The Senate delivered a slap at President Bush and its own Republican leaders Thursday by passing a $2.6 trillion budget erasing his plans for cutting Medicaid, community development and school aid."

"In the Senate’s watershed 52-48 roll call, a coalition of Democrats and moderate Republicans voted to yank all $14 billion in proposed five-year cuts from Medicaid, the federal-state health care program for the poor and disabled."

"Those reductions, 1 percent of expected Medicaid spending over the period, are the keystone of plans by Bush and GOP congressional leaders to start controlling federal deficits that surged to a record $412 billion last year and show little sign of abating." 3-05
